  • Start the unit by creating the foldable seen here so that students can store all learned knowledge in one place.
  • Once the folding is complete, have students label each tab with adding and subtracting fractions.

Adding Fractions:
Under the addition flap, write:
1. MUST have ____(the same denominators)____.
2. Change numerator and denominator by __(multiplying)__   by the same number.
3. __(Add)___ the numerators and __(transfer)__ the denominators.
4. __(Simplify)__, if possible.

Subtracting Fractions:
Under the addition flap, write:
1. MUST have ____(the same denominators)____.
2. Change numerator and denominator by __(multiplying)__   by the same number.
3. __(Subtract)___ the numerators and __(transfer)__ the denominators.

Fractions is basic but very important that if a student miss to learn this properly he may find it difficult in his later studies. Knowing how to add fractions is the foundation to learn fraction properly and to successfully learn advance fraction topic in higher grades. To learn easily you need a checker that will check if your solution is right. I always use https://www.fractioncalc.com to check my solutions. But there are also times when manual checking is best especially when practicing the same fraction for a period of time.
