"That's a fact, Jack!"
Uncle Si has become well known in my 5th grade classroom this year and when teaching fact and opinion, I'm going to bring Si into the classroom!

Fact

A statement can be proven to be true or false.

Opinion

A statement that is how someone thinks or feels.
Now that students are comfortable with the two vocabulary words, follow the activities below that will explain better and allow for time to practice.
Teachers:
-Retrieve a lesson (with video and assessment) to implement in your class.
-Printable Fact/Opinion Game to play both in, and out, of class.
Students:
-Visit ToonUniversity to practice 5th Grade Fact and Opinion.

-Select "Fact" or "Opinion", then submit to find out how you did!

Now that we have tackled adding and subtracting of fractions, let's move onto multiplying and dividing fractions!
After adding the following slides to a flipbook/notebook, continue to scroll down the page to view videos, practice problems, and receive advice.

As spring enters the air, below you will find a quick science instructional unit that is fun and interactive! Food chains and food webs are much easier to teach with visual addends and hands-on activities to display and keep. When you are teaching parts of the food chain/web, having students illustrate their own picture and label the different producers, consumers and decomposers.
FOOD CHAIN:
A food chain illustrates the path that energy takes from creature to creature. Food chains begin with plant-life, and end with animal-life.
  • Click here to assemble a food chain!
  • Play review game here.
FOOD WEB:
The interlocking and interdependence of food chains.
Build your own food web!
PARTS OF A FOOD CHAIN/WEB:
Producer- Able to produce their own food (plants).

Consumer- Unable to produce their own food, so they must consume other animals/plants.
Herbivore- Eats only plants.
Carnivore- Eats only meats.
Omnivore- Eats both animals and meats.
*Practice sorting these consumers!

Decomposer- Breakdown materials and make the soil rich.

*Game to practice producers, consumers & decomposers.
*Worksheet to assess student learning.
APPLY YOUR NEW KNOWLEDGE!
Worksheets that coincide with food chains/webs.
Activities to share with others.
Page full of crafts to incorporate inside the classroom.

Fractions:
When thinking of fifth graders, fractions is a difficult concept for students to understand. Using the sites and resources below will enable you to teach fractions in a way that is organized and easier to understand.  Each topic has at least one video lesson, support, and game to correlate.

  • Start the unit by creating the foldable seen here so that students can store all learned knowledge in one place.
  • Once the folding is complete, have students label each tab with adding and subtracting fractions.

Adding Fractions:
Under the addition flap, write:
1. MUST have ____(the same denominators)____.
2. Change numerator and denominator by __(multiplying)__   by the same number.
3. __(Add)___ the numerators and __(transfer)__ the denominators.
4. __(Simplify)__, if possible.

-Video to explain adding like denominator fractions.
-Video lesson to show how to add fractions with unlike denominators.
--Use this site to check your work for adding fractions with like and unlike denominators.
---Online game to practice adding like denominators.
---Online game to practice adding unlike denominators.
Subtracting Fractions:
Under the addition flap, write:
1. MUST have ____(the same denominators)____.
2. Change numerator and denominator by __(multiplying)__   by the same number.
3. __(Subtract)___ the numerators and __(transfer)__ the denominators.
4. __(Simplify)__, if possible.

-Video to explain subtracting like denominator fractions.
-Video lesson to show how to subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
--Use this site to check your work for subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators.
---Online game to practice subtracting like denominators.
---Online game to practice subtracting unlike denominators.

-Video that reviews adding and subtracting with like denominators.
-Video that reviews adding and subtracting with unlike denominators.

All students enjoy music, fun and interactive lessons! Although teaching figurative language is not an easy task with all students, educators can still make it enjoyable and meaningful!
Samples include similes, metaphors, personification, idioms, antonyms, and more!
Below you will find resources that will vamp up your personal figurative language library, and make you a stronger teacher! You will find games, activities, foldables, and music to incorporate within your lessons.
